Ekekwe has said he contributed to semiconductor and sensor technology during his time in the United States, including work related to accelerometers used in consumer electronics. Online posts often shorten that history to say he personally designed technology inside the first iPhone, a claim that is broader than the available evidence supports.
Through companies and technology initiatives, he later discussed developing hardware and digital platforms intended for African markets. Reports described a smartphone concept that would use blockchain features for identity, payments, records, or secure services.
The project should not be confused with a mass-market phone that has already replaced established brands. The better-supported story is about an engineer with experience in microelectronics trying to connect locally developed hardware with emerging financial and data systems. His work reflects a wider push to build more technology products within Africa rather than relying entirely on imports. See less
